Ch.32 Silver Moon - part1

Ruby, Sapphire, Kunzite and Midnight were talking about their ideas and plans to each other.

Ruby: ... And tomorrow we'll only have two days left until we're forced to battle the UnMythics. Time is running out, and we still don't have much of a plan.

Kunzite: At least we're prepared to fight, Ruby. I bet most of the UnMythics don't have a clue whats going to happen in the next few days!

Midnight: I'm pretty sure the UnMythic army in Sunbeam Shores knows what's going on.

Sapphire: Whether that's true or not, we don't know what their secret weapon is... or WHERE it is.

Grandma: Ok, that's enough questions for tonight. I think you all need to go to bed.

Kunzite: Do we have too?

Grandma: You have a busy day tomorrow. You need to help gather food and supplies, while I have to help make potions for our warriors who will be fighting on the battlefield.

Midnight: ... Give us an hour.

Grandma: five minutes.

Midnight: Half an hour.

Grandma: Seven minutes.

Midnight: Twenty minutes.

Grandma: Ten minutes.

Midnight: Fifteen minutes.

Grandma: ... Very well. Fifteen minutes, and no more.

Grandma went upstairs, leaving the cousins and Midnight to themselves.

Ruby: ... What now?

Kunzite smirked at Ruby before dashing outside. Mora (who was in the kitchen) got up and ran after her.

Sapphire: Mora!!! Why you... what do we do, Ruby?

Midnight: An obvious question with an obvious answer - we go after them!

Midnight got up and darted after her.

Ruby: ... Looks like he made the choice for us.

Ruby and Sapphire got up, and sprinted after them through the dark and misty forest of Everwinter.

Ruby: Sometimes I wonder why Kunzite does what she does.

Sapphire: I don't. She does these things for fun.

Suddenly, Midnight came into view, looking confused.

Midnight: Hey, guys. Have you seen your pink cousin? I was following her and then... I guess I lost her.

Sapphire: Classic Kunzite. Starts to play hide and seek when we want her most.

They all look up as they hear soft music. They hear Mora howling somewhere, and Sapphire starts running into the direction of the noise.

Midnight: What is that?

Ruby: A clue!

Ruby and Midnight dart after Sapphire.

Midnight: What do you mean, a clue?

Ruby: Kunzite is a musician. She plays all sorts of instruments, from pianos to drums, to bells.

Midnight: So...

Ruby: She's the one whose making that sweet music!

They skidded to a hold as they see Kunzite sitting in a tree, playing a silver flute. Mora was at the foot of the tree, howling. Kunzite came to a slow stop in her music, and Mora stopped with her.

Ruby: What is the meaning of this, Kunzite?

Kunzite: Just having a little fun, that's all.

Ruby: And why was Sapphire's hound howling?

Kunzite: You mean singing. This bloodhound was singing.

Ruby: ... Anyway. Why are you here?

Kunzite jumped down from the tree and turned around and started walking back into the darkness.

Ruby: Wait! Where are you going?

Kunzite: You'll have to find out~!

Ruby sighs and treks on after Kunzite with Midnight. Sapphire dashes up to them, and walks with them.

Sapphire: What's Kunzite up too?

Ruby: No idea, but she obviously knows something.

They continued to follow Kunzite into the darkness.

Ch. 31 You have mail! - part.2

After training with Melody; Ruby, Sapphire and Midnight come back home, exhausted.

Midnight: Next time I say I want to train... just hit me over the head and tell me I'm crazy.

Sapphire: Noted.

Ruby: I must admit it... that took a little longer than I thought.

Grandma (who had been in her potion lab) came through the door.

Grandma: Good evening. How was training?

Sapphire: Hard. Not to mention boring.

Grandma: Wars are dangerous. You need experience with swords in order to have a higher chance of surviving.

Ruby: But you did alchemy!

Grandma: I still needed to learn how to swing a sword, though. I couldn't use my potions and wits alone.

Just then, there was knock at the door. Grandma went to the door and opened it. A young Vampire gave Grandma two letters. She thanked him and closed the door.

Ruby: That must be the replies from our other cousins!

Sapphire: Well, don't just stand there! Open them!

Grandma gave Ruby the letters and she ripped one of them open. She started reading.

Ruby: "Hello, Ruby! Thanks for letting us know about the upcoming war. This explains some of the strange events that have been happening up here. But we cannot help you right away. If what you say is true, we need to prepare and do what we can do protect our village. From Citrine  and Emerald."

Ruby gave a disappointed look at Sapphire, and placed the letter on the table. She opened the other letter, and started reading.

Ruby: "Dear fellow cousin. I had my suspicions that the UnMythics would be trying something, and you reinforce that theory. If a war is coming, there is a high chance that one of our kind will be kicked out... for good... Oh, and the answer to your invisible question is no. I can't help you unless I'm positive that my village is fine. Sorry. From Amethyst."

Ruby sadly put the second letter on the table and sighed. before sitting down.

Ruby: ... I know this may seem a bit childish, but I was hoping that our other cousins could help us figure out, and destroy the UnMythics Ultimate weapon...

Sapphire: Yeah, that would've been a bit of a stretch. They have villages to protect, Ruby. Just like us!

Ruby: I guess... but I'm still disappointed.

Grandma: I thought you said you'd send a message to Shadow Forest?

Ruby: I did... I guess it's either they didn't get it, or something else...

Midnight: I'm never going to remember how many cousins you have, am I?

???: Probably not. There are a lot of us, after all.

They all look up to see a pink kangaroo by the doorway.

Ruby and Sapphire: KUNZITE!!! What are you doing here?

Kunzite (pink kangaroo): To give you this...

Kunzite gave Ruby a letter. Ruby ripped it open and began reading.

Ruby: "So... you're probably wondering why I haven't replied yet, like all our other cousins have... well... I'll tell you why... I CAN HELP YOU!!!"

Ruby looked up from Kunzite's letter, and raised her eyebrow.

Ruby: And... you didn't think about your village when traveling here?

Kunzite gave Ruby a sardonic smile.

Kunzite: Of course I did... thinking about if they're alive or not...

Grandma: Did the UnMythics get your village as well?

Kunzite: I'm afraid so. I wasn't quite sure if other villages had the same problem, y'know... with invasions from the UnMythics...

Sapphire: Yes. Ivywood's lord has been taken for about a year, Darkriver village has been ambushed with no Vampires left... and I believe a group of UnMythic scientists have tried to steal the Dragon egg from us.

Kunzite: You have the Dragon egg? The one that the Dragons left to us and no one has found it before or since?

Midnight: That would be the one.

Kunzite: ... Oh, and I'm Kunzite, by the way. Don't think I've met you before!

Midnight: The names Midnight.

Kunzite: Pleasure to meet you!

Midnight: Likewise.

Grandma: ... Do you want anything to eat, Kunzite? After traveling for such a long time, you must be tired.

Kunzite: Well... I WOULD like some Raven cookies, if you have them.

Grandma went to the kitchen, while the cousins and black cheetah talked.

Ch. 31 You have mail! - part.1

At Grandma's house, Ruby, Sapphire, Midnight and Topaz were sitting around the table for a meeting.

Ruby: Ok. Let's get started.

Midnight: Yes... get this over with, please!

Ruby: ... As you should all know, the war between us and the UnMythics is in three days time.

Sapphire: Yes... we KNOW that.

Ruby: But we don't know what their secret weapon is... so it's time we start talking more seriously about it.

Sapphire: Explain.

Ruby: Well... seeing that you, Sapphire Diamondeye DeathDancer, are an UnMythic-

Sapphire: Diamondeye is an insult more then a name to me now. Sapphire DeathDancer will do.

Ruby: ... Do you have any idea what your kind is planning?

Sapphire: Well... I'm assuming they're going to play by their strengths and your weaknesses. Probably something to do with cinnamon and machines.

Topaz: That's possible. They did do that last time, after all.

Ruby: True.

Midnight: But WE have the Dragon egg. We have the element of surprise! We have-

Sapphire: Will it hatch in time?

Ruby: The fire creature in the crystal cave said "When the Egg has fully hatched, then the real war will start".

Sapphire: I'm assuming that means it will hatch the moment the war starts... But that could be bad.

Midnight: Will the Dragon know how to fight?

Ruby: Well... I don't know that, to be honest.

Midnight: Great...

Topaz: Well, I think we should worry about the Dragon later. For now, you guys need to train, figure out where the UnMythic's weapon is, and not to mention you still have a few more villages to warn.

Ruby: I already sent out bat-mail to them. They should get them this afternoon, IF the bats are quick.

Topaz: "If" is a big factor in the race against time, Ruby.

Ruby: I know...

Topaz: Are our other cousins coming here, or are they sticking to their parts of the island?

Ruby: We'll know by tonight, I guess...

Midnight: ... So are we going to train or not?

Ruby and Sapphire looked up at Midnight, surprised.

Ruby: Are you serious, Midnight?

Midnight: No, I just want to sit around and swish my tail until the war starts. OF COURSE I'm serious!

Sapphire: So you want to train instead of stealing for a change?

Midnight: Pick-pocketing won't help on the battlefield. We need actual battle skills to fight.

Topaz: But you're practically kids! Will your Vampire Lord allow the very ESSENCE of our SURVIVAL to go on the battlefields and risk their lives?

Ruby: Well... we've come this far without dying!

Topaz: ... I'm going to your library to research certain things.

Sapphire: Shouldn't you be training with us?

Topaz: I've already had my training when I was your age. I don't want, or have to do, basic sword skills again. See you later.

And so saying so, Topaz got up and left the house.

Sapphire: ... Does all Topaz think about is reading?

Midnight: I hope not.

Ruby: ... Anyway. Let's go and train!

Midnight: As much as I hate working, we have a village to protect, and we won't let UnMythics drive us out because we're different.

Sapphire: That's the spirit, soldier!

Ruby, Sapphire and Midnight all dash out to the Vampire Lord's mansion for some more training.

Ch. 30 Where's Midnight? - part.2

Ruby and Boo crept down the wet and cold steps, down into the M.O.S.T hideout. An orange wolf looked up from making some sort of red brew. Nearby, was Midnight, looking like he'd come back from a battlefield. He turned to look at Ruby, and stepped back a bit, trying to keep a calm face.

Ruby: ... Hi.

Midnight: Ah... wasn't expecting you to be around...

Stella: You know them, Midnight?

Midnight: In a way... so... What are you two doing here?

Boo: Oh, you know. Just happened to be in the area, so we decided to... drop in and see what you were doing.

Midnight: Yes, well... great to see you guys.

Ruby: ... What happened to you, Midnight?

Stella: The furry patch of black got into a fight with some of his friends... and he lost.

Midnight: Only because there was two of them, and one of me.

Stella: That wouldn't have made much of a difference.

Midnight: ... Besides, they didn't hurt me that much. I'm fine.

Stella: Stop being stubborn, Mr. BlackMoon. You are injured. And that means you're hurt and need help.

Midnight: ...

Ruby: So... does this happen on a daily basis?

Stella: I wish I could say this hasn't happened before... but then I would be lying.

Midnight: And we all know you're a terrible liar.

Stella: What I can't steal, I make up in fizzy drinks and light beer.

Boo: ... So... can I-

Stella: Yes.

Boo: Do you make RedShadow snow?

Stella got a couple of bottles down and poured them in a nearby cup. She added some black powder in the mix and gave it to Boo.

Stella: And that will be two gold and seven silver, please.

Boo dug into his pockets and gave Stella some coins.

Stella: You thieves are very polite and well mannered. Much more so than the ruffians I have to deal with every single day of my life.

Boo: Don't they treat barmaids with respect?

Stella: Not in this club... Want anything, red?

Ruby: I'm good, thanks.

Midnight: So... uh... why are you here?

Boo: Caught your scent and decided to pay you a visit, that's all.

Midnight: Right...

Stella (who just finished mixing a drink) gave Midnight a cup with bright red liquid in it.

Stella: Drink, Midnight. It's a healing potion. So it's good for you, unlike any other drink I make for you and your friends.

Midnight: I said I'm fine, Stella.

Stella: These ingredients are hard to get, Midnight. I don't make ridiculously hard drinks for fun, you know. So if you know what's good for you, THEN DRINK.

Midnight sighed and took drank the red potion. He swallowed, and coughed a bit.

Midnight: Strong stuff, that is...

Stella: Well, I hope so! I don't want bad plants and fruits in my drinks!

Midnight: Neither do I, to be frank...

Ruby: ... When you're ready, Midnight... we're leaving.

Midnight: W-... Oh... ok.

Midnight drank the rest of the red brew, gave the orange wolf some coins, and left with Ruby and Boo. Mora barked and yipped as they came back into the foggy sunlight where Sapphire sat waiting.

Sapphire: That didn't take long.

Midnight: ... How mad are you?

Ruby: Not so much mad... just more... concerned.

Midnight: Did you really think something would've happened to me?

Sapphire: You didn't show up at our research mission.

Midnight: I would have LIKED to... but I was distracted.

Boo: Well.. leave a note or something next time!

Midnight: Thieves don't leave notes.

Ruby: Well, it's about time they started. Come on. I think it's time I told you about what me and Grandma have learned.

Ruby, Sapphire, Midnight and Boo left the ghostly streets and back to Grandma's house.

Ch. 30 Where's Midnight? - part.1

Ruby was walking through the forest, breathing the fresh cold air, but stopped in her tracks when she saw Boo racing up to meet her.

Boo: RUBY!!! Have you seen Midnight?

Boo stopped in front of Ruby, looking worried.

Ruby: We were meant to go on a mission with Sapphire, but he didn't show up. Why? Whats wrong?

Boo: I haven't seen him since this morning, and it's lunchtime!

Ruby: Why do you want to see him?

Boo: I'm just... a little worried.

Ruby: Why should you be?

Boo: We're about to have a war with the UnMythics, there's been a lot of strange things going on... how can I NOT be worried?

Ruby: So... you're afraid that Midnight's been taken by UnMythics...

Boo: Hey, it could happen!

Ruby: I agree. Not very likely, but a possibility, nevertheless.

They both look up to hear barking, and see Sapphire with Mora coming down the path towards them.

Sapphire: Hello! What are you guys doing?

Ruby: Do you know where Midnight is?

Sapphire: Nope. Me and Mora were playing in the forest, and last time I checked, I didn't see any black cats.

Boo: Well, where on earth could he be?

Ruby: ... Well...

Sapphire: Yes, oh fourth cousin once removed? Do you have an idea?

Ruby: Uh... you see, I know Midnight goes to this... thieves club... and there might be a slight chance he's there...

Boo: Do you know where this club is?

Ruby: Sadly, no. But...

Sapphire: Maybe a certain red bloodhound can find out for us.

They all turned to look at Mora, who cocked her head in expectancy.

Ruby: ... Do we have anything that belongs to Midnight?

Sapphire: I think I saw his bag back at Grandma's house.

And so saying so, Sapphire dashed back to Grandma's house with Mora.

Boo: ... Shouldn't we let the Rescue team about this?

Ruby: I doubt they want to take time out of their day just to find a thief.

A little while later, they came back with Midnight's bag.

Sapphire: Ok, Mora. We need you to find our black cheetah friend, who may or may not be in danger. Now fetch!

Sapphire shoved Midnight's bag at Mora, and the hound started sniffing at it.

Boo: ... Is this going to work?

Ruby: We're about to find out.

Mora suddenly lifted up her head, and starting sniffing around the forest. After a while, she howled and dashed towards the village. Ruby, Sapphire and Boo charged after her.

After a while of chasing Mora, they come a maze of dark and eerie streets.

Boo: Uh... is your bloodhound SURE Midnight is somewhere around here?

Ruby: Yes. Probably... maybe... hopefully?

Boo: Well, this place should be the perfect place for hiding, ambushes, and secret clubs. Not to mention it lives up to ghost standards.

Sapphire: Eh. I've seen scarier streets in my days.

Sapphire followed Mora, who was now sniffing along the stoney walls.

Boo: Ok... keep an eye out for any old trapdoors or sewer passages...those are usually the entrance to a secret underground club.

Sapphire: And what do you know about that?

Boo: In Darkriver village, we learn simple skills, such as UnMythic evasion and bomb making. But our part of the island... let's say that it's not the best place to grow plants and such.

Sapphire: So...?

Boo: We have to learn certain thieving skills as well in order to get the things we need from passing Vampires and UnMythics. But sometimes we can sneak things across the island using Wing Service!

Ruby: ... So not only are you pranksters, you're also smugglers...

Boo: That's a bit harsh, don't you think?

Sapphire: Got any sweeter words to replace it, then?

Boo: ...

Sapphire: Didn't think so.

Mora stopped at a door, and whined and scratched at it.

Ruby: Distant cousin and friendly fake ghost... I believe we found the place.

Boo: ... What do we do now?

Sapphire: ... You two go on. I'll keep Mora back.

Ruby: Really?

Sapphire: Yes. Really.

Ruby: This is... very unlike you, Sapphire. Are you sure? We might have to battle thieving thieves...

Sapphire: I'm sure. You and Boo go ahead. I'll be waiting up here.

Sapphire took hold of Mora's collar, and gently pulled her back. Ruby slowly opened the door. They walk carefully down a set of Slippery steps, into the darkness.

Ch. 29 UnMythic history - part.3

A little while later, Ruby (with Fang) met up with Sapphire near the Golden Forests school.

Ruby: Any sign of Midnight?

Sapphire: I didn't see him on the way here.

Ruby: Where could he be...? He isn't usually late to these things. In fact, he often comes with me!

Sapphire: ... Should we wait for him to arrive?

Ruby: We'll wait for five minutes.

The kangaroo cousins waited for five minutes. Saying nothing, and hoping Midnight would show up. But after a while, Ruby got up.

Ruby: ... He's still not here.

Sapphire: Then... what do we do?

Ruby: We leave without him.

Sapphire: Wait, what?

Ruby: You heard me. We break into Golden Forests without him.

Sapphire: But we're untrained in the arts of thievery. We have a higher chance of failing if Midnight isn't with us showing off how to unlock a door!

Ruby: While that's true, we have a little spider with us to sneak into the smaller places... I know that isn't actually helpful, but unless Midnight runs into view yelling "wait for me", we're going without him.

And so saying so, Ruby started to head closer to the Golden Forests school.

Sapphire: ... We're going to get caught.

Sapphire sighed, got up and followed Ruby.

They sneak into the school, where they headed towards the  forbidden part of the library, where they find the entrance to R.O.O.S.T, open.

Ruby: Ok... that's... unusual.

Sapphire: Understatement of the day.

Ruby: ... Do we go on? This could be a trap!

Sapphire: If it is a trap, we'll soon find out.

Ruby and Sapphire were quietly sneaking along the halls of R.O.O.S.T. headquarters. Making sure no one was around, they headed to a research area. They started searching through books, making sure not to be seen.

Ruby: ... I'm pretty sure they were at least SOME history books in here...

Sapphire: And good thing they left the door open. It was just like they were expecting us, and wanted to make things easier because Midnight wasn't with us.

Ruby: ...

Sapphire: ... I was joking. You better be on your guard while we search through these books.

Ruby picked up a book titled "The Great Island war", and started reading it. She flicked through the pages, looking for something about the "Ultimate Weapon". After a while, she looked up at Sapphire.

Ruby: Well... while there's nothing about a Ultimate weapon, there is a lot of stuff about... taking over a "Moon Temple".

Sapphire: ... Never heard of it.

Ruby: Funny thing... neither have I.

Sapphire: Ok, now you have me scared.

Ruby: ... Listen to this. "The Vampires are retreating to other parts of the island. Before they come back with reinforcements, Captain Irontail wants us to take over their sacred temple, that is found on top of a hill near the Everwinter forest."

Sapphire: ... Go on.

Ruby: ... "We had no idea how many Vampires were coming back to claim what is rightfully theirs, (And to be honest, this war wouldn't be happening if Captain Irontail hadn't demanded more land than He needed from the Lord of the Vampires) but we're glad we took over one of their strongest safety bases."

Sapphire: ... Heh.

Ruby: You and the rest of the world.

Sapphire: Well... R.O.O.S.T, or Rescue Of Our Sun Temple... The UnMythics claimed the Vampires "Sacred Temple", which...

Ruby: Could very well be this "Moon Temple".

Sapphire: OK. We've got something, now it's time to go home.

Ruby: Hang on a minute! We still need to research through these books!

Sapphire: Fine by me. Take any books you want and LETS. GO.

Ruby grabbed a few more books and stuffed them into her bag, and she and Sapphire sneaked their way out and back to Grandma's house.

When they got back, Grandma was sitting at the table, reading a book. She looked up as they came in, and Mora dashed out of the kitchen and started bouncing around Ruby and Sapphire.

Grandma: Back from you mission?

Ruby: Indeed!

Ruby dropped books on the table and started reading.

Sapphire: ... Ok. You can read stuff. I'm going outside to play with Mora.

Sapphire whistled to Mora to follow her. They both race outside into the cold forest.

Grandma: ... Now, tell me what you have found out. Perhaps I can help?

Ruby and Grandma started talking, and didn't stop until lunchtime.

Ch. 29 UnMythic history - part.2

Topaz begins telling what she had learned. Everyone remained quiet.

Topaz: It all started 2000 years ago, where the war against Vampires and UnMythics had barely started. The UnMythic leader, Captain Irontail, after making his argument with the Vampire leader, Lord Silvertooth, started making plans for an Ultimate anti-Mythic Weapon.

Sapphire: I know about that. Me and Fang broke into the library and found a journal that said that!

Topaz: ... The problem is, no one wrote anything about this "Ultimate Weapon". What we do know, is that because of this weapon, they won the war.

Sapphire: Ah...

Midnight: So... no drawings, no descriptions... no nothing?

Topaz: I'm afraid that's what it seems like.

Midnight: But did anyone actually SEE the weapon?

Topaz: If they did, they're probably dust in the ground.

Sapphire: ... Ruby! Grandma! She was in the war! Does she know anything about the weapon? Or at least see it?

Ruby: Grandma was a Alchemist Apprentice! She was busy making potions to help save lives, not out on the battle field dodging dangerous cinnamon arrows!

Sapphire: Well... who ELSE was in the war?

Ruby: How am I suppose to know? The only other Vampire I can think of... is...

Kevin and Devin: The Vampire Lord of Everwinter village.

They look up to see Devin and Kevin, halfway down the stairs.

Ruby: Since when did you get so smart?

Kevin: Hey!

Devin: We resent that!

Ruby: ... Seriously, though. How did you know?

Kevin: You can pick up a thing or two at the training grounds.

Sapphire: ... I'm sorry. I can't imagine you actually working. Seems extremely unlikely, knowing you two.

Devin: Times are changing.

Kevin: So it's time to change.

Ruby: Wow... I never though I'd see the day when my two elder twin brothers started acting... serious. It's nice. Good for you! You realize the danger we're in and want to help!

Kevin: Not that. It's just Grandma took our skateboards and hid them somewhere. So we really have nothing else to do.

Ruby: You just crushed my dreams of having sensible elder brothers!

Devin: Sorry.

Kevin: We'll leave.

The two white brothers left the house and headed towards the Vampire Lord's mansion.

Topaz: ... Anyway. I've found absolutely nothing that can help us find out what Mayor Irontail's weapon is... It could be the same thing from 2000 thousand years ago, or it could be something completely different! I don't have a clue!

Midnight: ... Then why don't we do what we usually do?

Ruby: What do you mean?

Midnight: Sneak into an enemy building and sniff for answers. We are undercover spies after all! Isn't that our job? Our calling for the Vampire Lord?

Sapphire: The bad luck cat has a point, Ruby. We've been so busy questing all over the island helping cousins and villagers, we haven't actually done a proper "Undercover Mission" in days!

Ruby: I know, I know... But where can we look for answers about a secret UnMythic weapon that NO ONE has even spoken about in books?

Sapphire: R.O.O.S.T. headquarters sounds like a good place to start.

Ruby: ... Ok. I can't actually complain about that idea. We leave in half an hour.

Ruby dashed to Grandma's potion lab. Midnight (who was about to take a sandwich) saw Fang eating the last sandwich on the tray, decided to leave and go else where. Sapphire and Topaz stayed a little longer, before departing ways in the morning sun.

Ch.29 UnMythic history - part.1

Early the next day, Ruby, Sapphire and Midnight were wandering around Everwinter village.

Sapphire: Where are we going again?

Ruby: The Bat office.

Sapphire: Um... Why?

Ruby: Me and Grandma thought it would be a good idea to try and send out messages to our other cousins.

Midnight: Wait... You have MORE cousins?!

Sapphire: Of course! Me and Ruby are the most distantly related, but did you really think Topaz, Onyx and Diamond were all the cousins we had?

Midnight: Uh... maybe?

Ruby: ... Anyway. The others don't know about the upcoming war, and they need to be prepared.

Midnight: Do you know what they're preparing for?

Ruby: Not really... but I think it would be at least polite to warn them.

The gang walked into a small building with hundreds of bats. A green lion appeared from the back room.

Maxwell (green lion): Good morning, kids. What can old Maxwell do for you?

Ruby: Do you have three fast bats on hand? We need to get these delivered as soon as possible!

Maxwell: I believe so... what's the hurry?

Ruby: Important business.

Maxwell: If you say so. Just give me a moment, if you will.

The old lion whistled a shrill note. A few moments later, three young hyper bats were flying around his head. Ruby dug into her bag and pull out three letters.

Maxwell: Where are they heading?

Ruby: One to SandWing, one to Shadow Forest, and one to RavenEye mountain.

Maxwell: As you wish.

The three bats (who were listening carefully), picked up their letters, and flew out a small bat hole and into the daylight.

Maxwell: ... Anything else you needed?

Ruby: No thanks.

Maxwell: We hope to see you soon, then!

Ruby, Sapphire and Midnight went back outside, and headed back towards Grandma's house.

Sapphire: ... Wait a minute, we're supposed to be at school!

Midnight: Who cares about learning random knowledge now? A war is coming in three days!

Sapphire: My mum will be furious if she finds out I've been missing classes, though... I'm pretty sure the teachers will inform her about that.

Ruby: I think she would be even more upset so if she found out you're spending time with Vampires.

Sapphire: Good point.

They arrived at Grandma's house, and went indoors for something to eat. Topaz could be seen sitting at the table, drinking a strange fiery liquid.

Midnight: Hi Topaz... what's with the drink?

Sapphire: ... Smells like coffee!

Topaz: What's coffee?

Sapphire: A drink that was made to keep you awake and hyper for hours.

Topaz: Sounds terrible.

Sapphire: It is. It's meant for grown ups, but I managed to take a sip while my mum wasn't looking...

Topaz: ...

Sapphire: ... What?

Topaz: I'm starting to see why your mum wants to keep you in her sight.

Sapphire: Hey! I did learn my lesson! Don't drink anything dark and chocolaty until you're an adult.

Topaz: ... Liquthera.

Sapphire: ... I have no idea what that means, so I'm just going to ignore you.

Ruby: Ok, so... who wants a snack?

Midnight: What do you have?

Ruby: Let me check the kitchen.

Ruby got up and walked into the next room. Topaz took a sip of her drink.

Midnight: ... Seriously, though. What are you drinking?

Topaz: A strong brew that Grandma made for me.

Midnight: And... what does it do?

Topaz: She says it makes you stay awake for a few hours.

Sapphire: Why do you need to stay awake?

Topaz: Reading books.

Sapphire: Wow. Usually Ruby is the one who reads.

Ruby: (in kitchen) I READ ADVENTURE STORIES.

Sapphire: SAME THING IN MY BOOK.

Topaz: ...

Sapphire: Anyway... what were you reading about?

Topaz: UnMythic History.

Midnight: We have books about that?

Topaz: Well... a few... but mostly we just borrow them from the UnMythics.

Ruby came in, holding a tray of sandwiches.

Ruby: Would you spare a few minutes telling us about what you found out?

Topaz sighs and takes a sandwich from Ruby.

Topaz: Fine. But this might take a while.

Topaz took a deep breath and began telling them what she had read.

Ch 28 The Extraordinary UnMythic - part.3

The rescue team ran after the speeding bloodhounds through the forest. While they were running, something dropped onto Sapphire's shoulder. She looked up to see Fang.

Sapphire: Fang! What are you doing here? Weren't you with Ruby?

Fang: Yeah, I was. Sitting in her pocket eating leftover sandwiches.

Sapphire: Well... how did you get here?

Fang: After eating all of Midnight and Topaz's sandwiches, I decided to go back home to grandma.

Sapphire: So... you didn't notice they were being prisoners of a small fluffy fox that could be a dangerous criminal?

Fang: I did see a fox, yes... but she didn't have anything to eat on her as well. Believe me, I've tried.

Sapphire: Is that all you do? Think about eating?

Fang: No. I also think about eating sandwiches.

Sapphire: ...

Fang: ...

Sapphire: ... Do you know where Ruby is?

Fang: Why would you want to know that? There's nothing for you to eat where they are.

Sapphire: I don't care. TELL ME!!!

Fang: ... Behind the Winter Waterfall.

Sapphire: Great.

Sapphire looked around, having no idea where she was.

Sapphire: Um... where is the Winter Waterfall?

Fang: If I show you, can we all go back home?

Sapphire: Maybe.

Fang jumped down from Sapphire's shoulder and scurried across the forest floor. He came to a branch and tried to push it out of the way. Sapphire sighed and shoved it aside, revealing a view with a small waterfall.

Sapphire: How did I miss that?

Fang: ... Well, now you know where they are... I'm just going back home to Grandma.

Sapphire grabbed him before he could turn around and dashed towards the waterfall.

Meanwhile, Ruby, Topaz and Midnight were in a dark cave (which was even darker because it was nighttime), and had no idea how to escape. They sat on the cold water floor, discussing ideas and plans to escape from Mittens.

Midnight: (whispering) We could just make a run for it?

Topaz: (whispering) Doubtful. Too many of Mittens goons.

Midnight: (whispering) Well, any other brilliant ideas?

Topaz: (whispering) Not at the moment.

Midnight: (whispering) ...

Ruby: (whispering) Sapphire is probably running through the forest looking for us.

Topaz: (whispering) She'll never find us in a hidden cave behind a waterfall. Not even the bloodhounds can sniff us out, I think...

Midnight: (whispering) Not exactly cheerful, is it?

Topaz: (whispering) Just pointing out the facts. Fiy cau inna mio.

They remained silent for a few minutes, waiting for someone to suggest a way of escaping. There was a loud crash, and Sapphire ran past bandits to where Ruby, Topaz and Midnight were at.

Sapphire: Hi, guys! I finally found you!

Topaz: Sapphire! You do know that your probably also trapped alongside us now, don't you?

Sapphire: ... Oh, yeah... I might have forgotten to think this through.

Topaz: ...

Sapphire: ... What?

Topaz: Trying to think of an insult that fits you.

Sapphire: Nice to see you care about me.

Topaz: Yeah, I... LOOK OUT!!!

Topaz shoved Sapphire down to the ground, and a second later Mittens flew over them and crashed down onto the watery floor. She got up glaring, and wet.

Mittens: How did you find us? This hideout is practically INVISIBLE to Vampires and bloodhounds!

Sapphire: A little red spider whispered to me the way.

Ruby: You mean Fang, right?

Sapphire: Yeah...

Mittens: You little...

Mittens made a leap for Sapphire, but she dodged out of the way.

Sapphire: Calm down, fuzzball!

Mittens made another leap at Sapphire, knocking her to the ground. Mittens unsheathed her claws and held them to Sapphire's neck.

Mittens: You ruined my perfect plans... now is the time to pay!

Sapphire: Sorry, but I'm broke. Spent all my money on Ice cream with Midnight!

Mittens: Your walking on thin ice, blue roo!

Sapphire: And you may as well be walking on hot coals, fluffy!

Mittens: I'm not fluffy!

Sapphire: So your fat, then?

Mittens: BE QUIET!!!

Just as Mittens was about to slice of Sapphire's neck, Sapphire kick Mittens off her and rolled out of range. Mitten's bandits started to surround Ruby and Midnight, who prepared to fight. Before anything could happen, bloodhounds could be heard, howling their heads off nearby.

Mitten: RETREAT!!! The plans ruined and a rescue team is on their way! Get out of here before I throw you into the dungeons myself!!!

The bandits ran through the waterfall and into the deep dark forest. A minute later, Melody and Leader Quill showed up with the bloodhounds.

Sapphire: Too late guys - the parties over.

Melody: Well, Jack heard angry shouts, and it led to here. The Vampires who dashed through the waterfall were long gone before we could catch them.

Leader Quill: How did you know that Mittens and her gang would be in here?

Sapphire: ... I didn't.

Melody: But you managed to find Ruby and the rest.

Fang jumped out of Sapphire's pocket and scurried across to Ruby.

Ruby: ... How long have you been out of my pocket?

Fang: Ten, twenty minutes... hard to say.

Ruby: Remind me to tell you to come with us on every adventure for now on.

Fang: As you wish.

Topaz: Ok, happy ending and all... but we kinda want to go home now.

Leader Quill: Oh course. Come with us.

Melody: But you guys should explain everything from the beginning of everything.

Midnight: With pleasure.

Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz, Midnight and the rescue team headed back towards EverWinter Village.

Guest Post Fan Fiction. The Deathdancer histories - Part 2.

Bella Deathdancer (of the famous Deathdancer clan) watched the cold night pass from high up among the sails of the UnMythic General's ship.  They had traveled a long way around the coast before the eastern horizon paled and the sun lifted its head above the waves and covered Bella with its warmth. Just then a shout rang out.

UnMythic Sailor:  Spy!  There's a spy up on the mast!

Bella: (thinks) Oh No!  I'm trapped!  My shadow potion must have worn off...

Several sailors started climbing the mast, their swords held between their teeth.

UnMythic General:  Capture the spy alive!  We'll have another Vampire for our dungeons!

Bella: Actually no...  you won't.  I'm more of a trees and mountains sort of girl, rather than dungeons...  Yuk - that water looks rather cold again!

Bella ran down to the end of the mast spar, surprising some sleepy seagulls, and jumped out as far as she could.  A few rapidly fired arrows narrowly missed her before she plunged into the water that had, unfortunately, not got any warmer.  Holding her breath, she swam downwards until the ship had sailed out of arrow reach, then she surfaced and started towards a small beach.

The beach was at least dry and warm, and the sun cheered Bella up a little as she munched on an apple from her backpack.  The seagulls she had scattered jumping off the boat gathered around her chattering noisily.

Bella: I wish I could understand them...  wait!  I think there's a potion for that!

She fossicked around in her pack and found a bottled labelled Practo Biir Hia.  She took a gulp.

Seagull 1: That was very brave of you...

Seagull 2: We thought you had drowned...

Seagull 3:  You're a very good swimmer...

Seagull 1: Can we have some apple?

Bella: Tunka, um, I'm looking for a castle named Stoneguard, it was where the ship was sailing to.  Do you know how far it is?

Seagull 2: It's not far, the ship was nearly there...

Seagull 3: But it's too far for you to swim...

Seagull 1: Can I have some apple?

Seagull 2: It's on a little island...

Seagull 3: You will be able to see it from the top of this cliff:

Seagull 1:  Can I have some apple?

Seagull 2:  Be careful...

Seagull 3: There's lots of soldiers there...

Bella: Tunka again.

She chopped the rest of the apple into three bits and gave them to the birds, and then started climbing up the cliff behind the beach. A short time later she reached the top and was able to see part of a castle in the distance.  It looked to be about half a day's walk away.  Bella sighed and started her trek.  Fortunately the sun was warm, and after her clothes had dried, and she had discovered some cliff-top wild strawberries, she actually felt cheerful.

The sun was very high when she found herself on the clifftops overlooking Stoneguard castle.  It was on a  small island, completely covered by the castle, with only one gate that looked very shut. The only way across to the island was by swimming.  From her viewpoint, Bella didn't think the walls of the castle looked very climbable, and she could see a lot of guards on the entrance wharf...

Bella:  I didn't come all this way on a rescue mission to give up now, Elyot needs me...  Let's go exploring.  Maybe the water is lovely and warm now.

Bella took a swallow of Shadow Potion and climbed back down the cliff.  She noted, without much surprise, that the water was still horribly cold.  A short swim later she had crossed to the island and clambered onto the rocks, out of sight of the front gate guards.  She spent the rest of the day circling around the castle walls on the slippery rocks, but learned nothing useful.  She started to think that there was no way she could get into the castle after all.

Darkness started to fall, and rather than spend the night on the rocks, she dived back into the water so she could shelter in the forest beyond the cliff tops. Swimming under the wharf she was surprised to see a large sea creature approach her.

Sea Monster:  Well Hello!  Imagine seeing a Vampire at an UnMythic castle!  What are you doing here?

Bella: Hello!  Are you intending to eat me?

Sea Monster:  No - I've had dinner already, and besides, I'm a vegetarian.

Bella:  Cool!  I'm here to rescue a friend captured by these soldiers.

Sea Monster: I see - I've been watching you go round and round the island most of the day...

Bella:  I've found no other way in.

Sea Monster:  There is a underwater cave you could try - would you like me to take you there?

Bella:  Yes please - Tunka!

Bella took a deep breath, climbed onto the Sea Monster's back, and they sped downwards into the darkness.  After a minute they entered a cave and as they broke the water surface, Bella saw some stairs leading upwards.

Bella: Tunka for the ride! I hope to see you again one day when I'm not in such a hurry!

After climbing at least five hundred steps, Bella found herself in front of a steel barred door.  It was firmly locked.

Bella: (thinks) I'm too big to fit through the bars - but I have another experimental potion to try that should shrink me down to a smaller size for awhile.  I hope it works.

She found a bottle in her backpack labelled Maspilla Lobi Practo, and took a big gulp.  Instantly she changed to a tiny creature who wiggled through the bars and ran down a dark corridor towards the dungeon.  After sneaking in through the bars of another steel door, and crawling under the chair of a snoring UnMythic guard, she discovered the dungeon entrance.  Taking a quick look in each of the cells, she scurried along until she recognised a voice - it was Elyot quietly singing a sad song.  She squeezed in through his door, ran across the small room and jumped onto his foot.

Elyot:  Well hello!  What's a tiny platypus doing down here in the dungeons?  Are you lost little creature?

Bella: (the tiny marsupial) Squeak!

Elyot:  Don't worry, I'll keep you safe!

Bella: (annoyed)  Sqquueeaaaakkk!

Just then the mini-marsupial potion wore off and Bella reappeared.

Elyot: ...

Bella: Well, hello to you too!  Are you going to say something sensible or just stand there with your mouth open?

Elyot: ...

Bella:  I didn't think so.

Elyot:  Why were you a platypus?

Bella:  It was an experimental marsupial minimizing potion - I guess I chose the wrong marsupial...

Just then they heard the noise of many soldiers coming down the corridor.

Elyot:  They're coming to take me away for execution!  You have to hide!

Bella: It's too late for that.  Here drink some of this Xenon Practo, and follow me quickly, the potion won't last long on you.

Elyot:  It's not experimental too is it?

Bella:  Just drink!

In a couple of seconds, two black bats flew out the tiny window in the stone wall, and off into the darkness.  Several guards looked in through the bars and scratched their heads at the empty room.

Elyot:  This is fun!  I can fly like a bird!

Bella: No - you can fly like a bat, and only for a few seconds more...

The two bats flew over the castle walls and stopped being bats soon after.  They plummeted down into the dark icy water. After a large splash, they soon resurfaced.

Elyot:  It's freezing!

Bella:  Stop complaining - it's refreshing.  Now let's find a small boat to borrow from the UnMythics, and sail on home...

Devon and Kevin opened their eyes.  The Vampire Lord was standing in front of them.

Vampire Lord:  And that's how your Grandmother rescued me many years ago.  Now go back out to the training ground and work hard at becoming Vamparoos worthy of the name Deathdancer!

Devon and Kevin shot off like crossbow bolt, feeling much more like training very hard!

(Applestorm has finished her writing holiday, and so the proper Undercover Vamparoo stories will be back in two shakes of a bat's nostril - Juma!)

Guest Post Fan Fiction. The Deathdancer histories - Part 1.

On the EverWinter castle battle training field, Devon And Kevin were complaining again. Over and over.

Devon:  This is too much hard work

Kevin:  This is too much any sort of work

Melody: Right!  That's enough!  The Vampire Lord said to send you to see him if you kept whining - off you go!

Kevin: ...

Devon:  Umm, sorry?

Melody:  Too late now - you'd better not keep him waiting - Go!

The white Vamparoo twins slunk their way through the castle and into the Vampire Lord's office. After waiting for just long enough for them to get really nervous, he appeared in a flash of lightning and crash of thunder.

Devon:  Do you always do that?

Vampire Lord: It's a matter of style.

Kevin: Are we going to be punished?

Vampire Lord: I am going to remind you of your family heritage - what it means to be of the Deathdancer Clan!

The Vampire Lord waved towards some chairs.

Vampire Lord:  Sit down, and let me tell you a tale.  Just over two centuries ago, near the end of the last great war, another Deathdancer showed all Vampires what loyalty, duty and courage meant!

The wide-eyed twins sat down, and then as the Vampire Lord began his story, they felt their eyes slowly start to close as they were transported back in time...

A small black Vamparoo could be seen wandering through the remains of a battlefield.  A floating haze of thick cinnamon smoke and fog, combined with the long afternoon shadows to make a ghostly scene.  Broken armour, swords, spears and shields were scattered around, and a few groans from the wounded survivors could be heard damply on the air. She moved carefully between the  warriors, looking for signs of life, and giving healing potions to friend and enemy alike, to any that it would help save.  But all the while, she was searching for someone in particular - she was looking for her friend.

Bella: ...he has to be here somewhere...

A soldier from her own village opened his eyes and swallowed the potion she held to his mouth.

Soldier: Tunka! I feel much better now - I think I can make it back home,  I recognize you - you're Bella Deathdancer!  Who is it you're looking for?

Bella: That's good - take it easy, and go home through the forest, it's safer.  I'm trying to find Elyot, the grandson of our Vampire Lord...

Soldier:  He's been captured! I saw the UnMythics carry him away.

Bella: Was he injured?

Soldier: I don't think so - he was just knocked out by the cinnamon bomb, the same as the rest of us. What's in the potion?

Bella: It's a mix of cinimo hilee practo and silverberry essence.  I made it myself!

Soldier:  Well, thank you again - it's getting dark, you should go home too.

Bella:  No! - I'm going to rescue Elyot!

Soldier:  you can't do that - you're not even a warrior - you're just an atarex!

Bella:  Just watch me - I may only be a potion apprentice, but I'm smart -  stay safe and go home!

Bella headed towards the beach, the UnMythic's fort was visible against the darkening sky.  As she got closer she decided that trying to get inside was a silly idea - there were guards and flaming torches protecting the large front gates.  Keeping to the trees, she circled around the fort, and then drank one of her own new experimental potions, a karte-hia practo.

Bella: (thinks) My potion master would have a fit if she saw me drinking this! Experimental potions are risky! But if my head doesn't explode - this potion should let me listen in on what's being said in the fort...

The sudden burst of hundreds of voices filled her head, but with concentration, she managed to pick out individual soldier's voices until...

UnMythic Guard:  General! We've put the prisoner on the boat, and it's set sail for Castle Stoneguard - just as you ordered.

UnMythic General: Very good - ready my ship, I will head for the castle soon too.

Bella: (thinks)  Bother and botheration! He's gone - I'll have to sneak on board the General's ship and follow him... I wonder what other potions I have to help out?

Bella looked through her backpack and found a bottle she'd borrowed from her master - Dalan Practo, the potion of shadows.  She swallowed a big mouthful, and keeping away from the blazing torches, she made her way down the beach to where the General's ship was anchored a little off shore. Diving into the icy water, Bella swam out to the boat and clambered aboard. She then climbed up the mast and hid amongst the sails.

So this was adventure!  She wasn't sure she really liked it yet, but things probably couldn't get any worse...  just then the General came aboard, they raised anchor, and sailed away into the darkness.
